Engineering Intern

In the three months that I spent working at Orthodyne Electronics I learned far more than I expected. All of the summer interns were trained on how to use one of OE's flagship machines, giving us the ability to actually create wire bonds whenever we needed. As an engineering intern I spent extensive time working in the lab on a variety of projects. Through this lab work I became familiar with the operation of a Scanning Laser Vibrometer (SLV), a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and numerous oscilloscopes and other analysis equipment.

The work I did drew on course work covered in Mechanical Vibrations, Strength of Materials, and Mechanical Design. Everyone at OE was extremely friendly and outgoing, and I feel that one of the most important things I took away from my internship was knowledge gained from working closely with other engineers

I would recommend this internship to anyone who is interested in applying what he or she has learned in Vibrations, Controls, or Materials Engineering classes. But that was just my experience. Orthodyne produces a highly complicated product, and the opportunity exists to work on areas relating to many different subjects.

Marketing Intern...

Working for Orthodyne Electronics has been an eye opening experience into the real world. As students, many of us tend to view the corporate world as a vague concept that seems far into the future. However, my time at Orthodyne has grounded that concept into something very real and concrete. I have learned that in the real world qualities such as initiative, self-motivation, and communication are important in achieving success.

Through the marketing department, I have gained insight about how an international business operates as well as how many different departments of a company strive toward a similar goal. As Humanities majors, we are taught to practice skills such as communication and teamwork and through this internship I have realized how significant these skills are.

I have enjoyed my time at Orthodyne because my employers have treated me with respect and as an equal, rather than "just" an intern. They have trusted me with projects and responsibilities as well as pushed and encouraged me to do more. They have also taught me patience, responsibility, and improved my work ethic.

Technical Publications Intern...

Interning at Orthodyne Electronics has been a great learning experience for me. Throughout the internship, I have learned how the skills that I have learned as a History major can be applied to real world applications and practical uses. In the humanities we often times write essays supporting and defending arguments, or we analyze huge tomes of information deconstructing them and then reconstructing them into a simpler but more cohesive essays. At the internship, I have learned a different style of writing for a different purpose than we do in academia; instead of writing essays defending claims and insights in elegant prose, we write instructions explaining technical aspects in direct unambiguous English. Although the styles of writing may seem dissimilar, in both styles of writing, be it for academics or for business, the goals are often the same: to write concise, cohesive and clear documents so the audience you are writing for will understand the points you are making. In other words, making abstract ideas or concepts more concrete and available for the audience to consume and utilize.

Orthodyne itself is a place that strives to nurture the growth of its employees so that, in the end, the best possible quality of products can be created. The technical writers there have been very helpful in showing me various aspects of their careers and how they work from day to day. I would recommend the Humanities Internship Program to anyone who isn't set on a career. Interning is great experience to see what you might be missing and to grow as a well-rounded individual.
